Where can you go in time and space?
Just about anywhere!
In Catholic University’s Department of History and Anthropology, students follow their passion for learning about the past and present while developing valuable skills in archaeological, historical, and ethnographic research, analysis, and writing. The undergraduate history program is designed so that students study a wide variety of times and places, from “Medieval Japan” to “The History of the Present”, from Alexander the Great to Latin American revolutions, and a wide range of approaches, from religious, to intellectual, to political, to cultural and social history. The undergraduate anthropology program focuses on heritage studies and cultural resource management by providing rigorous training in archaeological and ethnographic methods and perspectives. All our courses are small, interactive and innovative, taught by faculty dedicated to conveying the excitement of discovery, and of interrogating the historical and ethnographic record in all its forms.
Both the history and the anthropology major are compact, requiring a minimum of only 10 courses (deliberately among the smallest majors by this measure on campus). This makes it especially easy for students to double-major, which is an option that a growing number of our majors are taking.
Students who want to study history or anthropology have a wide range of options. Both majors lead to many career possibilities, while the minors provide an excellent complement to many other liberal arts subjects. Both majors also mesh extremely well with the University Honors Program, and afford many opportunities to conduct original research using the rich resources of the Washington, D.C. area. History majors in particular can take advantage of joint programs that allow them to earn the B.A. along with an M.A., an M.S.L.I.S., or a J.D. in law on an accelerated basis.
